Classifiers

ClassifierFirst things first, what is a gold classifier? You can think of them as strainers. They help remove larger objects from your material. If you are panning, using a classifier will save you a ton of time. Panning without one can really be a pain in the butt. You will have to fish out all of the larger objects in your material.

Most gold bearing earth is also loaded with rocks of various sizes and shapes. It can also be loaded with chunks of wood, roots and even trash. Classifiers help to remove all of this unwanted debris before the actual panning stage and there are quite a few to choose from. Each one has a different size mesh allowing for different size debris to be trapped before you even start panning.

Most gold classifiers are made from plastic. There are several advantages to this. One is weight. The lighter the better. Sometimes you might have to hike a little while to get to your best gold producing spot and the lighter your equipment is the easier it is to get there. You will have plenty of work to do once you get there. There is no need to waste all of your energy on the hike.

I like the gold classifiers that have several stages. Each one filtering out smaller and smaller pieces of debris until you are left with nothing but rich gold filled pay dirt.

Using a classifier is so simple. You are going to let gravity do most of the work for you. Simply put the classifier over a five gallon bucket, pour some of your material over the classifier and start sifting it. Once you are done make sure you look very closely at what is left in the classifier. A lot of times you will find stones or pebbles that are also part gold!
