How To Use A Sluice Box

Sluice BoxesSetting up and using your sluice box properly is extremely important if you want to find some gold. Don't get me wrong sluice boxes are very simple to use but you have to make sure you are setup properly, if you want to maximize your gold and everyone does.

It is all about controlling the flow of water into your sluice box. If the water is flowing too fast everything will flow right out the end of your sluice box including your gold. If the water is moving too slow then gold, rocks and other debris will all settle in huge clumps and your sluice box will soon be a big clogged mess. It takes a little trial an error but once you get everything flowing just right, the gold will end up where you want it, in your pocket.

They key element that comes into play here is gravity. When water is moving at higher speeds gold gets moved with it. It gets trapped in suspension in the water. When the water slows down usually over deeper spots the gold falls out of suspension and settles to the bottom. The sluice box has built in riffles which alter the flow of water just enough to let the gold drop out of suspension and allow all of the dirt and lighter debris flow right on by. The height of the sluice box should drop one inch every foot of your sluice box. So if your gold sluice is three feet long, it should drop about three inches from the start to the finish.
